[L]akes Culture is looking to commission artists for new, innovative and artistically challenging projects for Lakes Ignite in 2018.
The Lake District National Park has been awarded World Heritage Site status for its cultural landscape (in July 2017), and the Lakes Ignite commissions will need to respond to the theme Cultural Landscape.
Building on the success of the previous Lakes Ignite events in 2015 and 2016, Lakes Culture is seeking to commission five unique works of visual art, which will be promoted collectively under the Lakes Ignite banner. The deadline for submissions is September 1 2017.
The commissions should relate to one or all of the three themes for which the World Heritage Status inscription was given:
- Identity – the way man’s interaction with the landscape has shaped what we see today
- Inspiration – a landscape that has inspired, and continues to inspire, artists, writers and visitors
- Conservation – a landscape that is worth preserving for future generations
The visual art projects can be in a variety of media to be seen at either day or night. Ideally they should have a level of interaction for visitors, be resilient to the weather and be suitable for family audiences.
Artists who have previously been commissioned include Charles Monkhouse, Amy Sharrocks, Oliver East and Steve Messam.
The 2018 installations will be located at venues including Langdale Estates, Rheged, Ambleside Salutation Hotel and Spa, University of Cumbria Ambleside campus and Windermere Jetty, Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories.
Usha Mistry from Lakes Culture said: “Lakes Ignite aims to raise the profile of the Lake District; to confound traditional perceptions of the cultural offer in area; and ultimately, to attract visitors from out of the county.
“Our previous commissions were a great success and offered a new visual interpretation of the Lake District National Park. We are looking forward to seeing what 2018 brings in terms of how artists will respond to the new World Heritage cultural landscape.”
