[G]enerous shoppers visiting Barrow’s Morrisons supermarket donated £130 in just three hours when volunteers for Bay Hospitals Charity’s Bayb’s Maternity Appeal held an afternoon collection there.
The appeal, which launched in February and is now more than half way to its £250,000 target, is funding “extras” for the new maternity unit being built at Furness General Hospital. These ”extras” fall outside the remit of what the NHS is able to fund but have been added to a shopping list of items, all designed to make the unit second to none in the country while giving it a real home from home feel for local families and for newborns, the best possible start in life.
Bayb’s co-ordinator Heidi Bowron said: “I’d like to thank everyone who donated to us at Morrisons and to the supermarket itself for giving us permission to hold a collection. We weren’t there for that long but it just goes to show that even if you only have a spare 10p or 20p, when loose change is added up it comes to quite a sum.”
Heidi is hoping for a further appeal boost this month with a good turn-out for the Bayb’s Bank Holiday Wiggle Waggle Walk –a family dog walk sponsored by Barrow’s Grove Veterinary Centre. It sets off at 10 am on Sunday, August 27th from Abbey Mill Café to follow a three-mile route through the grounds of Furness Abbey. All four legged finishers will receive a doggy bag made and donated by Roose Towns Women’s Evening Guild and other treats gifted by Paradise Pets, of Barrow Indoor Market.
Registration for the walk costs £8 per family and their dog or dogs (however many dogs). To sign up, telephone Heidi on 01229 404473, call in to the Bay Hospitals Charity office in the entrance foyer of Furness General Hospital or visit Bay Hospitals Charity’s website at www.bayhospitalscharity.org
