[O]n Sunday 10th September Riversmeet are organizing a special day of Storying* on the Confluence site in Cockermouth to celebrate Heritage Open Days and share the research we have discovered about this fascinating site. Come and join our storytellers, Jeff Wallcook, Ros Earthy and David Haley, at 11am and 2pm to hear their tales, myths and legends about rivers, suitable for all ages.
With a rich industrial heritage, the Confluence site, where the Derwent and Cocker Rivers meet, is an intriguing place to explore. Linger a while to share your own river stories, anecdotes and ideas to help develop the National Lottery funded Viewpoint project for this place.
Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the wider Viewpoint project will work with local people to shape the confluence site and how they wish to use it in the future. Thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £34,400, we are developing temporary and permanent artworks, to create a living heritage for this location and our futures.
Storying a past to many futures. Be part of the story.
Outdoor event so please wear appropriate clothing and bring a picnic.
Directions: The Confluence can be accessed on foot through the Jennings Brewery or from Main St. down High Sands Lane and across the footbridge. Disabled and pram access.
David Haley, project artist, said: “Discover the Cockerfish! From ancient times and cultures to social media, ‘storying’ is the way we understand our world. Viewpoint Storying will explore how we live with rivers and have fun!”
Nathan Lee, Head of HLF North West, said: “Over its history, the confluence site has served as a foundry, tannery, brewery and meeting place. We’re delighted that money raised by National Lottery players can support the Viewpoint project to capture this rich heritage and engage local people with the site’s story, including this exciting Storying event.”
