[T]he Tannahill Weavers are Scotland’s premier touring traditional folk band, with an international renown and a reputation for foot-stomping reels and jigs and heartfelt ballads. Ahead of their 50th anniversary in 2018, the band are currently on tour across the UK and will be stopping off at Egremont’s Florence Arts Centre this weekend. Ready the pipes for another night of great live music at this atmospheric and intimate venue.
The Tannahill Weavers’ diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Their music demonstrates to old and young alike the rich and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. These versatile musicians have received worldwide accolades consistently over the years for their exuberant performances and outstanding recording efforts that seemingly can’t get better…yet continue to do just that. They have turned their acoustic excitement loose on audiences with an electrifying effect. They have that unique combination of traditional melodies, driving rhythmic accompaniment, and rich vocals that make their performances unforgettable.
Founding members Roy Gullane and Phil Smillie have been with the band for their 50 years and the intuitive playing between the pair produce intricate and tight harmonies with a combination of the powerful pipe solos, Roy’s driving guitar backing and lead vocals, and Phil’s ethereal flute playing. The current line-up now includes Lorne Macdougall who, among many accomplishments, arranged and performed the pipes for the Disney Pixar movie Brave.
Fêted around the world, especially in the US and Canada where they tour regularly, the Tannahills have been awarded multiple honours including the Scotstar Folk Record of the Year for their self-titled third album and in 2011 they were inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame.
Don’t miss a chance to see them at their only Cumbrian date on the tour. Tickets cost £12.50 and can be purchased online at www.florenceartscentre.com or by phone on 01946 824946.
