[F]unding is available from Allerdale Borough Council to support affordable community housing projects aimed those finding it difficult to buy a home, such as first-time buyers.
The new Government grant has been launched with a number of local authorities aims to tackle the issue of high levels of second homeownership in their communities. Over £4 million being awarded across the Cumbria region as a whole, with £772,000 provided to Allerdale Borough Council.
The Community Housing Fund will focus on areas in Allerdale where the percentage of second homes are highest, such as those based in the Lake District. Grants can be used to support community-led, non-profit making organisations with social aims to deliver affordable community housing. This includes Community Land Trusts, groups interested in self-build or custom build and community groups interested in delivering affordable housing.
Councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes, Executive Member with responsibility for housing, said: “The Community Housing Fund can support a wide range of both capital and revenue projects that will benefit local communities. It will also help to deliver the Council’s key priorities, in particular by tackling inequality to help those most in need to access affordable housing. I would encourage all local groups who may be eligible for funding to apply for a grant, which will help us ensure many more people will have the opportunity to live in all parts of Allerdale.”
