[F]rom Saturday 9th to Sunday 18th September Blencathra will open to showcase the work of Sue Foster, artist and resident of The Blencathra Centre.
As part of C-Art: Art in Extraordinary Places, Lake District artist Sue Foster will exhibit her contemporary, acrylic landscapes inspired by living and working on the slopes of one of the Lake District’s most iconic mountains, Blencathra.
When talking about her work and her motivations Sue says: “It’s amazing to the think that Blencathra started its life as a muddy sea floor millions of years. I think of the mountains as time travellers – majestic and almost unchanging through the centuries as people’s lives unfold around them. This is one of the themes of my C-Art exhibition this year at The Blencathra Centre.”
“I came to painting from a geographical background, I’m very aware of the age and underlying geology of the Lake District landscape and living this extraordinary place provides no shortage of inspiration.”
“I’ve lived and worked at The Blencathra Centre for 14 years and am fortunate enough to have a fabulous view of Helvellyn from my studio, there are over 20 Lakeland peaks visible from The Blencathra Centre on a clear day, but even without the good weather the drama of the ever-changing light and cloud cover provides amazing scenery to reflect in my art. From the elevated location at Blencathra, the moonlight also brings the mountains to life in a surreal and magical way that other lights can’t quite manage.”
As well as Sue’s open studio exhibition at The Blencathra Centre, visitors can also view Terry Abraham’s film ‘Life of a Mountain: Blencathra’ as seen on BBC Four and a special exhibition from the Mountain Heritage Trust, who in March this year opened their new headquarters at The Blencathra Centre.
The Blencathra Centre will be open 10:00 am To 5:00 pm from Saturday 9th to Sunday 18th September. Cakes and refreshments will be available and visitor can also take in the spectacular view of the fells that inspired the art on show.
