[A]dler & Allan has been shortlisted for the SHIFT award for Best Climate Resilience Project, following its scheme in Cumbria to make three properties showcases for flood resilience, in order to encourage householders and business owners in the region to better protect their own buildings and sites. SHIFT is the sustainability standard for the housing sector and its awards celebrate exceptional projects that have an impact on the environment, the welfare of residents and the bottom-line of organisations.
Adler & Allan has been working alongside flood resilience campaigner, Mary Dhonau, in order to raise awareness and demonstrate the measures that can be taken to reduce the devastation that flooding can cause; an issue close to the hearts of many in the Cumbrian region. At the core of the project is the real life demonstration of flood installation measures, with free materials, man power and professional services supplied by supporting companies and individuals.
Identified with help from Carlisle City Council following the infamous floods of winter 2015/2016, the properties demonstrate a cross-section of the community – a residential home in Great Corby, Botcherby Community Centre and The Lucas Restaurant in High Hill, Keswick. The project has been funded principally by private businesses with support from the North West Regional Flood & Coastal Committee and the Environment Agency.
Speaking about the nomination, Mary Dhonau commented: “I am delighted that we have been shortlisted for the SHIFT Best Climate Resilience award. We are keen to showcase differing interventions that can be made, to enable people to #getbacksooner after a flood. We are adapting properties that face the real risk of being flooded. This is an exciting project, one that I hope will be a real game changer for those who face the increased threat of flooding.”
Support for the project has been overwhelming. Expert surveyors from a range of businesses have lent their services free of charge, in order to complete detailed Flood Risk Surveys of the properties. Flood protection providers and builders specialising in flood resilience repairs have supplied materials that will help make the inside of the buildings more resilient.
All category winners will be announced on 30 November at the SHIFT Awards 2017 ceremony at Plaisterers’ Hall, London, attended by over 250 leading sustainability and housing professionals and key decision makers.
