[A] CARELESS driver has been sentenced after crashing his car in the Lakes – and then lying about who was behind the wheel.
William Morgans, 20, lost control of an MG ZS which ploughed into a dry stone wall near Glenridding, Ullswater, on the night of June 24. This was abandoned and found by a police officer who drove past the crash scene the following morning.
Morgans later lodged a false report that the car had been stolen. However, Carlisle Crown Court heard he told the truth within an hour when pressed by police.
Morgans was sentenced by Judge James Adkin having admitted charges of careless driving, failing to stop after an accident and perverting the course of justice.
Kim Whittlestone, defending, said the defendant, of Sedgwick Court, Kendal, had made a “very, very foolish mistake”.
Judge Adkin ordered Morgans – a man of previous good character – to complete 150 hours’ unpaid work, and imposed five penalty points.
