[O]n Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 3,929 Prime Sheep, comprising of 3,166 Prime Lambs & 763 Cast Ewes & Rams.
This week we also held our Christmas Prime Sheep Show generously sponsored by Armstrong Watson Accountants and RI Stamper Haulage. Judging was in the capable hand of Mr M Bowe who awarded the Championship award to Mr MH Elliott, Espland House for a pen of five Beltex Lambs selling for £140 (286 pence per kilo) to Mr Bowe on behalf of Cocklakes Farm Shop, Troutbeck, Penrith.
Another strong average of 182 pence per kilo was achieved with 487 Lambs between 200 -286 pence.
Heavy Lambs sold to a much improved trade with a fantastic run of eighty 55kg Texel Lambs averaging £96 (174 pence per kilo) from Messrs JJ Henderson & Son.
Lighter Lambs met an unbelievable trade with Mr R Weir, Chapel Farm selling 22 Cheviot Lambs at 34kg to £66.50 (196.5 pence per kilo).
Cast Ewes and Rams sold to a sharper trade with very few meaty Ewes on the market.
The sale topped at £124 for a pair of Beltex Ewes from Mr T Mackenzie, Inverness.
