[F]or the young and young at heart, Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake presents Snow Play for children aged 3+ running until 23 December in its smaller, now very snowy Studio. In time for the cold snap that has already blanketed parts of the nation in the powdery white stuff, Snow Play is an utterly enchanting spectacle of wintry delights.
When Mr Green comes back from holiday to find Mr White in his house it’s the start of a ‘brrrrilliant’ series of adventures. Mr White puts icicles inside and covers the whole house in snow and Mr Green does everything he can to shoo him outside into the garden. Young and old alike get stuck in too with their own snow, making a giant snowman and joining in with a super snowball fight; but it’s getting warmer and, as Mr White stars to melt, the tables might be turning.
Described as ‘Wonderful’ in a five star review by the Metro, Snow Play tells the story of a show-down between Winter and Spring, over who gets to stay and who has to go away. As interactive as you wish, children are magically immersed in a frosty wonderland and encouraged to join in with indoor realistic-feel snowballs plus hypoallergenic feathers floating down and around as snow.
Seating for the show is unallocated, with rows of carpeted decking, benches and cushions making for a relaxed environment and ‘Gales of laughter’ according to The Stage. Snow Play actors Carlo Rossi and Lee White also employ mime and good old-fashioned slapstick to clever giggly effect in this non-stop children’s entertainment.
Snow Play is brought to Theatre by the Lake by Lyngo Theatre in collaboration with the Lyric Hammersmith. By Marcello Chiarenza and adapted by Patrick Lynch (former CBeebies star), the show features original music and is performed by Italian children’s TV presenter, Carlo Rossi who plays Mr White and Lee White, who plays Mr Green.
Suitable for ages 3+, tickets are £8 each and a family ticket (four people) is £30. They can be booked online at theatrebythelake.com or through the Box Office on 017687 74411.
