[F]ix the Fells has won not just one but two awards in recognition of its work repairing and maintaining mountain paths in the Lake District.
In The Great Outdoors Awards 2017, promoted by The Great Outdoors Magazine, Fix the Fells won the award for the hard-fought Campaign or Campaigner of the Year. The Fix the Fells volunteers, known as Lengthsmen, also picked up the new ‘Extra Mile’ award.
Joanne Backshall, programme manager of Fix the Fells, said: “This is a great recognition of the hard work of the whole Fix the Fells team, which comprises 20 Rangers and over 100 volunteer “Lengthsmen”. They carry out extremely difficult and skilled work in the high fells in all weathers so that we can enjoy the spectacular Lakeland scenery.”
“We are very grateful for this endorsement of what we do and for the wonderful support we receive from so many people.”
Fix the Fells is a partnership of the National Trust, the Lake District National Park, Natural England, Friends of the Lake District and the Lake District Foundation.
The Great Outdoors Magazine’s Editor, Emily Rodway, said: “Yet again, we have some fantastic winners in this year’s awards – but every individual, product and organisation shortlisted deserves recognition. Together, they represent the best of what’s on offer to outdoor enthusiasts in 2017.
“This has given us a fascinating insight into which outdoor brands Britain’s hillwalkers find most effective, where they go to buy their kit, which pubs and cafés they head to after a day on the hills, and the people and organisations they most admire.”
Full coverage of all shortlisted individuals, organisations and products can be found in the January issue of The Great Outdoors, which is now available and can be bought in supermarkets, newsagents and online direct from the publishers by following this link: shop.kelsey.co.uk/issue/list/publication/TGO.
