[A] man has been flown to hospital in Newcastle after a road traffic collision on the A66 between Threlkeld and Keswick.
Police were called at 2.20pm to reports of the incident, between an HGV and a car.
Part of the A66 near Threlkeld was closed as emergency services deal with the collision.
A spokesman for the great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) said: “We were called to reports of a collision between a car and an HGV on the A66 near Threlkeld, Keswick.
“A male patient, aged in his 90s was assessed by the GNAAS paramedic and doctor team before being placed into an induced coma and flown to the Royal Victory Infirmary in Newcastle for ongoing treatment.
His condition is described as critical.
A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: “At 14:18 firefighters from Keswick and Penrith were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A66, Threlkeld, Keswick.
“Crews attended the scene and found that the collision involved a car and a HGV which is carrying Hydrogen Peroxide.
“The team used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a man who was trapped in the car and he has now been taken to hospital via an air ambulance.
“The HGVs load is currently stable and firefighters remain in attendance at the scene while recovery work is taking place.”
The road has now reopened.
