[H]ead of Butchery at Westmorland Family Butchers, Dave Morland, recently spent a day doing a sausage-making masterclass with Crosby Ravensworth Primary School, a school local to Tebay Services.
The school are one of four local schools taking part in our School Awards programme, as part of which pupils gain a better understanding of growing, cooking and learning to love good food, helping to make a positive ongoing contribution to the children’s health and well-being.
Westmorland Family Butchers partnered up with us to fund the four primary schools involvement in the scheme as part of a five year charity partnership. Throughout the project they will be supporting the schools by linking them with their local producer network and engaging them through informative food and farming related projects and activities to give the pupils a chance to enjoy learning about food and farming.
Dave’s visit was enjoyed by pupils and teachers alike. Duncan Priestley, Headteacher said: “We had a WONDERFUL day with Dave, he’s a natural in the classroom! The sausages were absolutely yummy! We had them the following day and although we have some fussy eaters, everyone was more than happy to gobble them up!”
Dave and his team were also thrilled when they received a written report on the day by Poppy, a Year 4 pupil at the school. Poppy wrote in great detail about the benefits of eating local. Poppy wrote; “The welfare of the animals is really good because they have not been transported hundreds of miles to come here… We all really enjoyed making sausages and today we are going to eat them!”
