[A] Furness College student is hoping to spar his way to success in a national championship this weekend.
Brandon Carr, 17, is competing in the England Karate Federation Tournament in Leicester on Sunday 14th January.
Brandon is hoping for another win after earning two golds and a silver medal in October 2017 while representing England at an international championship in Germany.
He said: “I’m looking forward to competing in Leicester and I’m hoping for some more medals.
“I compete in karate and kickboxing and really enjoy them both. I work hard and train for two hours a day – or more than that if I’ve got a competition coming up.
“I didn’t take my medals off for about a week after winning in Germany, so I’m hoping for another victory in Leicester.”
Brandon, who studies Craft Engineering at Furness College’s Channelside campus, trains at Dojo Martial Arts Centre on Roose Road and finds it easy to fit in his training around his college work.
He said: “Dedication is key, and I believe anyone can achieve anything if they work hard.
“My tutors, particularly my Personal Progress Coach Sandra Crease, have been supportive and encourage me to do well on my course and in my competitions.
“My ambition for the future is to pursue a career in engineering at BAE Systems.
“Karate and kickboxing is a hobby for me at the moment, but I’ll see where it takes me.”
