[C]arlisle’s MP John Stevenson met with the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP today to discuss Carlisle’s St Cuthbert’s Garden Village bid.
The MP for Carlisle stressed his support for the development, which could see up to 10,000 new homes being built in the south of the city.
John said: “I informed the Secretary of State about my full backing for this ambitious bid, which could transform our city in terms of economic growth. I told him that I believe with the right infrastructure investment Carlisle has the opportunity to grow and fulfil its true potential.
I am aware that there will be some really stiff competition for this funding – therefore it was very important that I set out the very positive reasons why the Government should back the bid.
The Secretary of State acknowledged the strength of the Carlisle bid and was certainly impressed by the ambition shown by our city.”
Carlisle has already recently been awarded £275,000 by the Government to advance the bid, and Cumbria County Council has put in a £100m bid for cash to deliver a new Carlisle southern link road which is also backed by John Stevenson MP as well as Carlisle City Council, Cumbria’s Local Enterprise Partnership, and Transport for the North.
John continued: “If the southern link road is completed, then the south of the city is opened up for this new development and our city can continue to grow and prosper.”
