[C]ross Border Sportive based in Lanercost, Brampton is offering free entry to under 16’s to encourage young people to take up cycling.
All riders who are under the age of 16 will be eligible to take part in the event for free. The sportive taking place on Sunday 2 September has routes to challenge both the beginner and experienced cyclist, ‘The Recce’ a 30 mile route, The Raid’ a 50 mile route and an 80 mile ride called ‘The Invasion.’
Cyclists set out from Lanercost Priory heading north across the border to Scotland on quiet country roads. The routes offer spectacular views across the Solway and towards the Lake District before taking a well earned rest at the feed station in Penton village hall.
The event has become renown for its feed station. The tables are laden with cakes care of sponsors Bells of Lazonby with the gaps filled with sandwiches, crisps, pizza, and bananas and of course never ending pots of tea to get the cyclists ready for the hilly journey home.
Alison and Julian Hatcher and their son Kai rode ‘The Recce’ in 2017. Alison said; ” We had such a great time last year and it’s fantastic that as our son gets older there is an activity we can enjoy as a family! Getting out on our bikes together is precious quality time together, out in the fresh air and burning off some of his energy.”
Oli Burns, Event Manager said, “Cycling is a sport for all ages and we want to get as many young people out on their bikes as possible. It’s not a competitive event, it’s a timed bike ride in the countryside aimed at getting as many people out on their bikes as possible and offering them all a
suitable challenge.
“There is a great atmosphere on the day, and the feed station is a really sociable space to rest and refuel with masses of delicious treats.
“We’ve had such fantastic support from local cyclists and businesses and we really enjoy hosting the events and can’t wait for this years event.”
Riders will receive entry packs and spot prizes from sponsors Bells of Lazonby, Velo Vixen, MucOff, Lake District Biltong, Kendal Mint Cake, Dare 2b and BikeSeven.
All riders who are under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult to take part in the Sportive.
The event is open for entries online with the early bird discounted rate applicable until the 30th June.
