[A] scene remains in place in Ancoats after officers discovered the body of a woman this morning.
At around 7.40am today, Tuesday 13 February 2018, police were called to reports that a man had jumped from a second storey flat window onto the roof of a stationary black Hyundai on Swan Street, before assaulting two people.
Police then received further reports that the man fled on foot towards Thompson Street before smashing the window of a black BMW and assaulting the driver.
Officers were on the scene within minutes and the man was detained.
Police then gained entry to a nearby flat and discovered the body of a woman, believed to be in her 20s. A Home Office post mortem will be carried out today.
A murder investigation has been launched and a scene remains in place at the block of flats while enquiries continue.
A 37-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of murder, remains in police custody but is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Several road closures remain in place including Swan Street.
Superintendent Chris Hill, of GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “This was clearly a very traumatic incident that will have shocked people in the area but I want people to know we have a team of detectives working tirelessly to establish the exact circumstances of what has happened.
“We have not yet been able to inform the family of the woman of her death but are doing our very best to do so, so we can offer them specialist support during this difficult time.
“Although we received reports that a number of people were assaulted in the local area, thankfully, none of them are seriously injured.
“I would urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch as a matter of urgency.”
