[C]alling all would be self-builders! Heard about self-build or custom build housing? Like the idea of designing or building your own home or getting together with others to do something like that?
If ‘yes’ this FREE event is for you!
The Carlisle Self and Custom-Build Housing Information Event will be held at Carlisle College (Room G38), Victoria Place from 6pm on Thursday 15 March 2018. Refreshments will be available from 5.30pm.
The Government recognises that self and custom build housing is a great way to create high quality, value for money housing to help increase diversity in the UK housing market. Carlisle City Council is keen to add support, and has facilitated this evening event in partnership with Andy Lloyd (National Community Land Trust Network).
The event will provide an opportunity to network with industry experts and other self-builders, and will explore different ways in which self-build can be approached, ranging from commissioning homes from developers and builders, to doing everything yourself, or getting together with like-minded people to deliver a community build scheme.
The event features a series of short presentations and discussions as follows:
- Carlisle City Council introduction, benefits of and potential for self-build around Carlisle.
- Andy Lloyd, National Community Land Trust Network technical adviser, examples of individual and group self-build from around the country, sources of support.
- Sustainable Carlisle co-housing group aims.
- Adam & Kate Jackson, our hands-on straw bale self-build in Crosby Ravensworth.
- Matt Simpson, our experience getting to start on site in Greystoke.
- Neil Murphy, Town Developers, delivering the Marmalade Lane custom build scheme for the Cambridge co-housing group.
- Greg Denwood, Castles & Coasts Housing Association – how Housing Associations can help deliver affordable self-build schemes.
- Andrew Yates, Eco-arc architects – project management and construction methods, involved in successful “Passivhaus” schemes.
