[A] Carlisle man has appeared in court charged with common assault on his former wife.
David Michael Walters, 46, of Watermans Walk, Carlisle, appeared before District Judge Gerald Chalk at Carlisle Magistrates Court.
The court was told on December 28 last year he visited a hospital with his former wife and one of their sons, after the appointment she went to her car and an argument started between the pair, he was very abusive towards her calling her names, walked away, then turned around and raised his clenched fist towards her pulling the drivers door open and threatened to kill her, members of the public intervened and he left.
His lawyer Nick Kennon said his client pleaded guilty and offered a full apology to the court on Mr Walters’s behalf.
Their relationship (married for 22-years) ended some months ago, the judge was told the defendant has a “stressful job” he is the deputy manager in a Highways Control Room, this is a high pressure job, the meeting at the hospital ended in friction, there were frank exchanges made, no threat would have been carried, it was all said in anger, Walters also suffers from depression.
The judge said “this was a breach of trust on your former partner and she should still receive respect from you”.
Walters was fined £350 with court costs of £85 and a victim’s surcharge of £35.
