Penrith Spring Special 2018

Champion Beast L-R: Joe Lancake, Sponsor – Murray Farmcare, Janet Flintoft, Sponsor – PFK Land Agency, John Crapper, Judge, James Raine, Vendor

[O]n Monday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their Annual Spring Special Show & Sale of 900 Store Cattle, kindly sponsored by Murray Farmcare and PFK Land Agency.

Judging was in the capable hands of a regular supporter, Mr J Crapper, Barnsley, who awarded the champion honours to an eleven month old British Blue cross Limousin bullock from Messrs W & J Raine, Randalholme, this beast later sold for £1,160 to Mr D Barker, Scarborough.  Reserve honours went to a Charolais heifer, bred and farmed locally at Greystoke Castle Farm, which later sold for £1,270 to Mr I Grainger, Wigton.

One of the best local trades seen for a while was witnessed, considering the outrageous weekend weather, with both farmers and buyers, battling against the winter storms. 103 beasts sold over the £1,200 mark, topping at £1,505 for a nineteen month old Limousin bullock from Messrs Atkinson, Scratchmere Scar, purchased by Mr D Barker.
A pair of fantastic twenty three month old out-wintered Simmental bullocks from Dalemain, Penrith, averaged £1,450.

A quality run of well-fed and well-presented British Blue & Limousin bullocks and heifers from Messrs TT & JE Mason, Bank Farm, averaging £1,310.

A run of Limousin heifers from Messrs WW Armstrong, Stoneybeck Farm, averaged £1,331, and sold to a top of £1,435, bought by Mr D Barker.

Dairy bred cattle were wonderful to sell, with Messrs HM & R Ivinson, Hole House, selling British Blues and Continentals to average just shy of £1,300, topping at £1,355 for a pair of British Blue bullocks.

Native bred cattle were a strong trade once again, with a pen of five dairy bred Aberdeen Angus bullocks achieving £1,265 from Messrs S & W Maughan, Street House
