[A] trip to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester turned into a penalty shootout for the Year 6 pupils at Windermere School.
The pupils were visiting the museum as part of their history topic – World War 2 – on the same day as Shay Given’s BBC Sport Relief 12-hour penalty shootout marathon was taking place in Media City.
Their school blazers caught the eye of the organisers and the pupils were asked if they would like to take a penalty against the former Premier League and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper. The pupils jumped at the chance and a few of them even managed to score against him – not bad considering Given has made 134 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
On the day, Given faced around 2500 penalties, as Sport Relief raised in excess of £38 million for various charities.
BBC presenter, Dan Walker, tweeted; “So impressed with @No1shaygiven… 12 hours saving penalties in one thing but he spoke to everyone, had photos with all who asked, spent time talking to all the kids & never stopped smiling. Well played that man…”
