[A] BANNED driver who led police on a high speed chase along residential Carlisle roads as schoolchildren walked nearby has been jailed.
Patrick John Young, 29, travelled at up to double the 30mph limit in daylight around the Scotland Road and Stanwix areas bidding to evade pursuing PCs with blue lights activated.
CCTV played to Carlisle Crown Court showed schoolchildren walking along pavements as Young sped past in a silver Saab at 3-30pm on March 5. He flouted a host of rules on suburban streets and initially escaped capture as police abandoned the chase due to fears over the safety of others.
When interviewed four days later, Young, of Firlands, Stanwix, Carlisle, denied being behind the wheel. But later in court he admitted dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and no insurance.
Young, a man with seven previous dangerous driving convictions and no licence, was sentenced today (FRI) by Judge Peter Hughes QC. He was jailed for 16 months, banned from driving for three years and must take an extended test.
“You could so easily have run somebody over and killed them or caused them serious injury,” Judge Hughes told him.
