[A] CARLISLE man whose “suspected handgun” sparked an armed police response at the city’s railway station has been given a caution.
Armed officers were deployed to the Court Square area as a precaution on Wednesday afternoon. A number of marked force vehicles were also in attendance.
It followed the reported sighting of “a male carrying a suspected handgun” on nearby Collier Lane – which runs parallel to Botchergate – a force spokesman said.
Onlookers watched as police conducted enquiries in the area, one speaking of officers “swarming”.
Police later confirmed that a man had been detained and the weapon in question – said to be a “replica firearm” – recovered.
No threats were made to the public during this incident.
A police spokesman confirmed this morning (FRI): “A 25-year-old man from Carlisle received a caution for possession of an air weapon in a public place.”
