[M]onday saw the first #ParkLives session kick off at Hindpool Urban Park. Joined by Barrow Police, The Mayor of Barrow – Cllr Tony Callister and Barrow AFC Community Coaches, 28 youngsters enjoyed 2 hours of fun sport activities in the sun.
Barrow ParkLives, is an initiative from Barrow AFC Community & Cumbria County Council which aims to offer different sports and activities at Hindpool Urban Park for youngsters aged 10 – 16 years old.
From football, to tag rugby and boxing, the FREE activities will promote physical activity and give youngsters the opportunity to try new sports.
Barrow ParkLives takes place every Monday, from 6pm to 8pm until the middle of August.
A £300 donation towards equipment for ParkLives has been received from the family of Christopher, (Chris) Mark Dixon who passed away in November 2017. Donations of £600.00 were received to be split between the Bluebell Foundation and Barrow AFC Community Sports.
Chris Dixon’s Mum – Maria Dixon informed that she wanted to support Barrow ParkLives because of the important contribution that sporting activities provide to enhance children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. These sport projects are (she feels) not only the developing of physical skills and exercise, but could be a way for youngsters to make friends, have fun, learn about fair play, being part of a team and improving self-esteem and health.
Chris particularly loved football and as a youngster he played for various teams. He was always active and had a great passion for sporting activities of which he would take up the opportunities to be involved in.
Chris’ would have had high regard for the Community Sports Projects and we thank all who donated to enable us to support this which we feel is an apt tribute in memory of our Chris.
Emma Broadbent, Community Development Officer said: “Barrow ParkLives is a great reason for young people to get outside and celebrate summer, we are encouraging all teenagers to come done to Hindpool MUGA, meet new friends, play a few games and just have fun.”
“The aim of ParkLives is to use sport to help young people to become healthier, safer and more successful. We are using sport to empower young people to kick-start a cycle of positive change in their own lives that resonates across their communities.”
