[E]conomic students at Penrith’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School have enjoyed a visiting speaker from the Bank of England.
John Young has been the North West Agent for the Bank of England since 2003. His talk to a group of some 35 QEGS sixth form students tackled a range of topics around the role of the Bank of England, including the Monetary Policy Committee, inflation, quantitative easing, the banking crisis and banking regulations.
Economics teacher, Emily Hamilton, who arranged the visit, said: “John’s talk was really informative; it was particularly interesting to hear historical information about inflation back in the 1970’s and the role of the Bank of England in dealing with that.”
Two-thirds of QEGS’s year-13 economics students are hoping to go on to take related degrees.
Alex Halsall, a year 13 student who is taking A-Levels in economics, geography, English literature and medieval history, and has an offer from Durham University to read Liberal Arts, said: “It was good to get an inside view from someone with a lot of experience and specialist knowledge. The way he explained about quantitative easing, which is a topic lots of people had struggled with, was really good – afterwards they said they understood it better.”
