[A] WOMAN who stabbed her husband as he slept has been granted bail to undergo a full mental health assessment.
Andrea Sarah Doyle, 45, knifed Richard Weir in the stomach in a bedroom of their home at Stonethwaite, near Keswick, last November. He underwent emergency surgery to repair a single wound.
Carlisle Crown Court heard how Doyle was later deemed by medical experts to have suffered a “very severe” acute psychotic episode. This meant, the experts concluded, she didn’t know what she was doing at that time and/or didn’t realise it was wrong.
Earlier this week, a jury found Doyle not guilty of wounding Mr Weir, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, “by reason of insanity”. Jurors heard agreed evidence she was suffering from “disease of the mind” when she stabbed Mr Weir, who remains “totally supportive” of her.
At the crown court today (THURS), Judge James Adkin granted bail to Doyle, noting she was in “significantly better mental health”.
Doyle will now undergo a full mental health assessment. Judge Adkin will consider a progress update early next month as he seeks to resolve the case.
