[T]he scale and impact of the work needed to make the Central Plaza building on Victoria Viaduct in Carlisle safe is far greater than anticipated.
A Carlisle City Council spokesperson said: “A specialist structural engineer will inspect the building tomorrow (Wednesday 30 May). The building remains in a critically dangerous condition and expert advice is needed to establish what further work is required and how this will be undertaken.
“The scale and impact of the works is far greater than anticipated and on-site work is suspended until we have a detailed assessment that sets out how to make the building safe.
“We are continuing to work in partnership with Cumbria County Council’s highways team and specialist contractors to ensure the safety of the former Central Plaza building.”
