[T]his year, Ullswater Yacht Club celebrates sixty years of promoting sailing to generations of families in the Lake District. The Club’s Diamond Jubilee also marks an opportunity to build important partnerships with community groups and funding bodies keen to shape a sustainable future for all who come to enjoy the lake and its surroundings.
The Birkett family has a longstanding tradition of working to protect Ullswater and its many pleasures, so the Club is absolutely delighted that Lord Thomas Birkett has agreed to lead its special UYC Anniversary Fundraising Campaign – the building of its dynamic new clubhouse.
Since 1963, Ullswater Yacht Club has been proud to host the spectacular Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy, which attracts sailing enthusiasts from all over the world. The race commemorates Lord Norman Birkett’s successful defence of the right of public access to Ullswater which, at the time, was threatened with reservoir status. The Club is thrilled that Lord Thomas Birkett has agreed to support the Fundraising Campaign as Patron and follow in his grandfather’s footsteps, championing Ullswater for the benefit of generations to come.
“In 1962, my grandfather fought to ensure the future of Ullswater, and his actions have enabled thousands to enjoy its beauty ever since. I feel honoured to be following in his footsteps more than 60 years later, leading the campaign to improve facilities on Ullswater so that future generations can experience its joys also. I urge you to join me in supporting Ullswater Yacht Club’s campaign to build a new clubhouse that will not only serve the sailing community, but will provide a vital resource for visitors to the area, schools, and the local community,” Lord Thomas Birkett, Patron, UYC Anniversary Fundraising Campaign.
