[F]OUR outstanding Year 8 mathematicians from Penrith’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School have obtained an exceptional result in the national final of this year’s UK Mathematics Trust Team Challenge.
Having won their regional heat in April, Thomas He, Finley Ilett, Arjun Sankar and Wilf Teasdale were invited to the Royal Horticultural Halls in Westminster to compete in the national final. The teams spent all day in London, completing five rounds of maths problems to be solved as a group or in pairs.
The QEGS team finished 7th out of 88 schools from all sectors in the final and 1,742 schools who originally entered the competition.
The team were also awarded a “Best in North West England” certificate.
Maths teacher at QEGS, Dr Matthew Bramley, said: “What an incredible achievement for these four young mathematicians. Their success is all the more notable as teams normally consist of two older Year 9 students along with two Year 8s. We are very proud of them all.”
