[A] BANNED motorist who led police on a 105mph night-time pursuit in a car he stole from his mother has been locked up.
Cannabis addict Andrew Colin Sutton, 31, was said to have consumed the drug for “several hours” before driving his mum’s Hyundai vehicle without her permission just before midnight on May 22.
Between Maryport and Arkleby, a police officer clocked 105mph on rural, winding roads to catch up with Sutton, who also hit 100mph, ignored road signs and forced several other motorists to take evasive action.
When Sutton was finally detained after clipping a kerb having travelled through several villages, he admitted his driving had been “appalling”, Carlisle Crown Court heard. He later admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, no insurance, cannabis possession and taking a vehicle without consent.
Recorder Kevin Grice – who jailed Sutton, of Noble Croft, Aspatria, for 14 months and imposed a two-year driving ban – said: “One only needs to think what might have happened if a pedestrian had stepped out in one of the villages. This could have been utterly catastrophic.”
