Valuable experience for students as the NHS turns 70

Students at the Cumberland Infirmary last week

[L]ocal students experienced life behind the scenes of the NHS to prepare them for careers in healthcare last week.

North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust (NCUH) and Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) are working with the Centre for Leadership Performance (CfLP) to offer the week-long work experience programme for 28 year ten students across north and west Cumbria.

Students spent the week with a range of clinical services at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle as well as with different managers to find out more about what it takes to make it in their chosen career. They had the opportunity to meet staff from all levels of the organisations and also learn about the wide range of behind the scenes services needed to provide patient care.

It was an extra special week in the NHS as it celebrated turning 70 on Thursday with events and parties across the hospital, which the students took part in.

This week, students will get the chance to experience the NHS in West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven as it opens its doors to the programme.

Jean Hill, learning and development manager at NCUH, said: “This programme offers a fantastic opportunity for students to learn what variety a career in the NHS offers. It also allows them to experience a range of skills that are required in a busy hospital.

“The enthusiasm of the students is great to see and we hope they’ll be back as staff when they’ve completed their education.”

The programme is just the start and students can use the relationships they develop over the week for ongoing support. Kate North, head of workforce futures & inclusion at CPFT, added:

“We’ve seen some fantastic young talent. We are really committed to growing our future local workforce and stay in touch with the students well beyond their week with us to offer ongoing support and advice. It’s a great programme to be part of.”
