[C]ockermouth Mountain Rescue Team was called during the night at 12.42am on 15th July to assist a 65-year-old fellwalker who had slipped and fallen from the ridge between Steeple and Little Scoat Fell high above Ennerdale.
The alarm was raised by the walkers companion who remained on the ridge.
A Cockermouth MRT spokesman said: “Team members ascended Steeple Ridge from the Ennerdale Valley to the informants location and roped down some 80m to the casualty’s position.
“Tragically, the man sustained fatal injuries from his fall.
“All the team’s thoughts are with the walker’s companion, his family and friends.”
25 CMRT members responded to the incident.
Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 199 from Prestwick also attended but was unable to assist due to very low cloud cover over the fells.
