A local man, who has his identity protected by a reporting restrictions order under sections 86 to 90 of the UK Coroners and Justice Act 2009, has published a book entitled: ACEs in the shadows – Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences. The book offers a candid explanation about adverse childhood experiences and how toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children, putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death.
The author, who is a core participant in the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), describes himself as 10 ACEs Survivor and says he has published the book to help raise funding for a wider project that is offering free screening of the film documentary RESILIENCE The biology of Stress and the Science of hope, which is directed by the Hollywood actor Robert Redford’s son; James Redford. Within the pages of this small book the author reveals tragic truths about his own ACEs and the devastating effect on his long term physical and mental health.
Recent reviews of the book have helped to secure presales in their hundreds from across Cumbria and the UK, with sales in USA also being achieved.
‘ACEs in the shadows’ is not simply a book about the ACEs study and the ACEs movement. It is a personal account of A. Survivor’s lived experience, a narrative that brings into sharp focus the detrimental impact of highly Toxic Stress and the damaging consequences of Adverse Childhood Experiences across the life course. The truths about ACEs in terms of behavioural, physical as well as mental health implications are poignantly described in the author’s inimitable style of ‘Tell it how it is’:- Descriptions of abuse, neglect and family dysfunction that are gut wrenching; accounts of determination to triumph over adversity that are heartrending and heart-warming in equal measure; an enlightening read for anyone interested in becoming truly ACE Aware and Trauma Informed. The authors adverse childhood experiences are an example of how society has mistreated children over many years, while pretending to be a sophisticated, first world country. The reality is very different. Children, and there are many thousands of them, have had their life chances completely destroyed by adults who abused their power and influence. The war, and it is a war, against the violation of children in our country and many others, has only just begun. It will be a long war. Graham Wilmer MBE – Director Lantern Project
