[A] CARLISLE mum found “heavily drunk” while looking after her young child has been spared an immediate jail term.
When police called at the woman’s city home at around 8pm on June 16, they found a beer can on the doorstep and saw a young child wearing only a nappy through a window.
After the woman opened the door, officers observed an “extremely messy” home with dirty nappies “strewn” over the floor.
A breath test revealed she was the equivalent of three-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit. Prosecutor Neil Ronan told Carlisle Crown Court she was “clearly heavily drunk”, wasn’t capable of looking after the child and couldn’t work her phone when attempts were made to contact other family members.
The court heard she had earlier knocked back almost a litre of vodka before falling asleep.
She was sentenced today (FRI) having admitted child neglect and resisting PC charges. Recorder Andrew McLoughlin suspended a four-month prison term for two years after hearing the woman was trying to tackle her drink problem.
She must also complete rehabilitation and an alcohol treatment course.
