New type of yoga class for Denton Holme fitness studio

Jana Mulholland and Laura Lowrie at The Studio

Carlisle’s Denton Holme fitness centre – The Studio – has recruited one of the city’s most popular yoga practitioners to teach an exclusive class.

Jana Mulholland, 42, a highly-experienced yoga specialist and Reiki master, will be running a brand new weekly Hatha class every Wednesday morning from 19th September.

“Hatha is a gentle type of yoga that is open to everyone, men and women, of all ages and levels of fitness and flexibility,” explained Jana.

“It is a progressive class that allows you to gently and slowly ease into poses.

“But more importantly, it enables people to get to know themselves as my style of delivery includes periods of reflective meditation against beautiful background soundscapes.’’

“It is a kind of healing therapy.”

For Laura Lowrie, bubbly owner of The Studio on Denton Street, Jana’s appointment is a real coup.

“I’ve heard amazing things about Jana from other yoga teachers and from people who have loved her classes elsewhere in the city,” she said.

Laura, 35, a self-confessed fitness addict, moved The Studio to the site of the former Mitchell Dryers on Denton Street a year ago. It was previously located in Rome Street.

Operating under a strict anti-elitist, no attitude, open, affordable ethos where classes are just £5 a time, The Studio – which recently celebrated its first anniversary – has a growing following for its varied classes.

These include Pilates, kettlecise, konga, barre, piyo and boxercise.

“Two other excellent yoga teachers run classes here but theirs are more active – very different to the Hatha style that Jana is bringing,” explained Laura

“Yoga is becoming more popular so I am really pleased to be adding another style to our portfolio of classes. Mats are free to hire.”

Jana, originally from the Czech Republic, has trained in India and Canada and introduced children’s yoga to the city in 2010.

She also teaches other styles of yoga – including classes for pregnant women – as well as running holistic therapy workshops.

“I’m so looking forward to bringing Hatha yoga to The Studio in Denton Holme – the area of the city that I have called home for many years,” she said.
