A CARLISLE teenager who burned his ex-girlfriend’s passport as she prepared to go on holiday has been sent to custody.
A judge at the city’s crown court noted how Craig Lee Cherry left Toni Hetherington “terrified for her life” during a confrontation at her home. Cherry, 19, entered her address on July 19 despite being banned from contacting her by a restraining order imposed for previous domestic violence against her. At the time her bags were packed ready for a holiday.
Cherry twice grabbed Miss Hetherington in a headlock despite her trying to fight him off, and bit her on the back. He then set fire to her passport, forcing her to abort her trip.
Cherry, of Orton Road, Carlisle, was sentenced today (THURS) having admitted several charges. These were the restraining order breach, damage, assault, cocaine possession and escaping from custody after running away as police arrested him.
Cherry was described as “remorseful” by lawyer Paul Tweddle, who suggested any custodial sentence could be suspended as there were “building blocks” for rehabilitation.
But Recorder Julie Clemitson imposed an immediate jail sentence of nine months and 30 days, saying of Miss Hetherington: “She was afraid for her safety. She was terrified for her life.”
