Police are appealing for witnesses following a three-vehicle crash on the A595 today (Oct 1).
The collision, involving a Mazda 2, a Ford C-Max and a Volvo, happened near West Lakes Science Park at about 7.30am.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “The driver of the Mazda, a man, aged 33, of Whitehaven, was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle by ambulance with a serious injury.
“Two people in the Ford were hurt but did not suffer serious injuries.”
A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “At 7:30am firefighters from Whitehaven were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Egremont Road, Whitehaven.
“Crews extricated two casualties using hydraulic cutting equipment and passed them to the care of the ambulance service.
“Crews were in attendance for approximately one hour.”
The collision led to the road being closed for some time while emergency services attended.
Diversions were in place. The road reopened at about 1.35pm.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to contact them.
