Penrith had an off day and never really got to grips with Wigan’s neat passing and movement game.
Right from the start of the game Penrith were sloppy in possession and kept handing the ball back to Wigan who looked comfortable in possession.
It was no surprise that Wigan took the lead in only the 14th min.
Wigan continued to dominate possession and Penrith were restricted to counter attacks. To their credit Penrith remained disciplined and on several occasions got behind the Wigan defence. Eventually this ploy brought about an equaliser in the 40th min when Sophie Nutter’s run from midfield was picked out by Georgia Smethurst and Nutter slid the ball past the advancing keeper.
Frustratingly Penrith only maintained parity for 2 mins before a wonderful Wigan passing move down the left stretched the Penrith defence and the Wigan striker tapped in at the far post.
HT 1-2
In to the 2nd half Wigan again dominated possession and Penrith keeper Michelle Jones had a busy afternoon.
The introduction of substitute Heather Fawkes coincided Penrith’s best period however it was Wigan who eventually stretched their lead and effectively sealed the game with their 3rd goal.
Manager Simon Savage said “Wigan deserved their win today. We never came to terms with their passing and movement. We will look to work on things in training and bounce back next week”.
