A NEW bench has been installed outside The Beacon Museum in memory of a much-loved member of the team.
Anne Cook, a well-known and popular historian, died in April this year, and her family has now installed the memorial bench overlooking one of her favourite views; of Whitehaven and the harbour.
Anne’s passion for Whitehaven and its history lead to a lengthy career in the former Whitehaven Museum, and subsequently The Beacon Museum.
Jeremy Cook, one of Anne’s four sons, said: “My three brothers and I wanted to leave a lasting memory of Mum, and thought a bench at The Beacon Museum would be the perfect way to do this.
“Mum’s passion and dedication to the history of Whitehaven was so obvious to all who knew her and we hope this will ensure her memory will live on for many years to come.”
Elizabeth Kwasnik, Director of The Beacon Museum, added; “I’m honoured and delighted that Anne’s family have chosen to locate her memorial bench at the museum.
“Anne would, whenever weather permitted, take her breaks from work on the grass verge outside the museum and look out over the town and harbour.
“When guiding walking tours, visitors would gather here while Anne shared her immense knowledge of Whitehaven’s history. Visitors, friends and colleagues will take great benefit and comfort from the bench and enjoy the vista it affords.
“On behalf of the museum’s staff and visitors, I would like to offer sincere thanks to Anne’s family for this most generous gesture in memory of their Mum.”
