Fell runners from Penrith’s Queen Elizabeth Grammar School have finished third in the national fell running championships, this year held at Giggleswick. The four top counters gained 21 points, finishing 3rd overall, but only a point ahead of the 2nd-placed school.
First to impress was Thomas Renwick, running in the race for year 8 & 9 students; being only a year 8 pupil himself, he performed well amongst the older runners, gaining 10th place. In the next race, for years 10 & 11, Robin Regan and Sam Almond, both in year 11, powered through the ranks to finish 3rd and 7th respectively.
Alongside year 10’s Ben O’Dowd (14th) and Barney Pannone, QEGS scooped top team in this age group. Amelie Marshall (year 10) and Gemma O’Dowd (year 9) also performed well in the equivalent girls’ races.
Last to race, in the year 12 &13 age group, was top finisher for QEGS, Eve Pannone. Eve was relentless in her attack with a desire for nothing but a win but had to settle for 2nd in a race which went to the wire.
Team coach, Mrs Kerry Davies, said: “Once again our runners have done themselves proud, working hard and showing great team spirit, and they fully deserve their success. My personal thanks go to parent Sara Renwick in standing as team manager and for her great photography on the day.”
