A DRUNKEN thug who headbutted and then glassed a man in a Carlisle nightclub has been jailed for 18 months.
Lewis Allan Murray, 26, was initially involved in an amicable discussion with Daniel Balmer inside the city’s Bambu nightclub during the early hours of November 12 last year.
But Carlisle Crown Court heard that as Mr Balmer turned to walk away, businessman Murray launched a vicious “three-fold assault”. He headbutted Mr Balmer and then punched him in the face while holding a glass, which he then hurled at his victim’s head after he lay on the ground.
Murray calmly left the Botchergate club and walked past police officers before running away. Mr Balmer, who passed out and was taken to hospital, suffered injuries which included two black eyes and a cut which was stitched.
Murray, of Main Road, Ecclefechan, was jailed today (FRI) having admitted an unlawful wounding charge. The court heard the building company boss, who also runs a gym, had shown remorse and not drunk since the attack, but had several previous convictions for violence.
Passing sentence, Judge James Adkin told him: “What you did on that night was, in essence, drunken thuggery.”
