This was the first ever meeting of these two teams and the vastly experienced Stingers team bossed the opening 30 mins of the game.
Time and again they seemed to win the 50:50 tackles and pick up the loose ball. They deservedly took an early lead when Penrith failed to pick up the Stingers striker from a free kick and she dispatched the ball into the top corner of the net.
Gradually in the latter stages of the first half Penrith started to get a foot hold in the game and started to threaten to Stingers goal. Twice Lily Gaulton went close, first seeing her shot cannon off the post then later on she lifted the ball over the cross bar when she got on the end of a cross.
HT 0-1
Into the 2nd half Penrith started brightly and were able to sustain a period of pressure on the Stingers goal. This culminated in an equalising goal when Georgia Smethurt’s free kick into the penalty area was headed into her own goal by a Stingers defender.
In the latter stages the game became open and stretched with both teams having opportunities to score. Livvy Johnston and Georgia Campbell both went close for Penrith however it was Stingers who got behind the Penrith defence and snatched the winning goal late on.
