The winner of the Trilby Tour Championship of Cumbria, held at Carus Green golf club, was finally announced on Sky Sports last Monday evening.
The competition, which is one of the biggest golf tournaments in the industry, was held on 21st June with Sky Sports covering the event. Those not present on the day had to wait until this week when the winner was finally revealed! And there was delight county-wide when the winner was named as a Carus Green’s very own three-times Club Champion and employee, Mike Turner!
Super-talented Mike, who plays off a handicap of just one, pipped three others to the post in a thrilling four-competitor play-off, with Mike winning with a final score of 33. He was joined in the three-hole play-off on the 5th, 8th and 18th holes, by fellow club-members, Gaz Hudson, and former Captain, Ian Fairhurst, together with Scotland-based golfer, Frank Brannon.
“It really was the most exciting day and I’d played well throughout, so was delighted to be able to hold my nerve to achieve a positive outcome,” said Mike. “In the play-off, I managed to par the first two holes and sunk a 40-foot putt to birdie the 18th in-front of a home crowd. It was a very memorable experience.”
141 players, plus caddies, turned out at Carus Green to compete in the prestigious amateur golf tournament, now in its 11th year. The grand final of the championship was held on 30 August at Hull golf club and will be shown on Sky Sports on 24th December.
It’s the second time that Carus Green has played host to the William Hunt Trilby Tour Regional Championship of Cumbria, and in doing so, welcomed hundreds of spectators in gloriously sunny conditions. Golfers have hailed the Trilby Tour as the closest experience to a professional tournament, playing under the pressures of an international televised event.
With annual viewership figures of more than 3.5 million in 2016, the Trilby Tour is officially the largest amateur golf television series in the UK and Europe.
“Following a tremendously successful 2017 Trilby Tour event, we didn’t think we could better it, but 2018 has proved to be just extraordinary,” said Carus Green’s owner, Graham Curtin. “We welcomed more players this year, larger crowds and had a home-grown winner lifting the trophy. It honestly doesn’t get any better than that! Our hearty congratulations go to Mike on a fantastic achievement.”
