A teenage boy has died and another remains in a critical condition following a collision in Oldham.

At around 2.55am today (Saturday 10 November 2018), police were called to reports that a grey Vauxhall Insignia had collided with a bicycle on Oldham Road at the junction with Hollinwood Avenue in Oldham.

The Vauxhall Insignia fled the scene in the direction of Failsworth.

Five minutes later, police received a further report that a Vauxhall Insignia had collided with a Skoda Octavia taxi on Oldham Road in Failsworth.

The driver of the Insignia fled the scene on foot and the car has been recovered on Roberts Street.

Police immediately responded and deployed officers to both scenes to trace those involved.

A 27 year-old man was arrested nearby on suspicion of dangerous driving and drink driving.  He remains in custody for questioning.

The cyclists – two boys aged 17 and 19 – were taken to hospital where sadly the 17-year-old died as a result of his injuries.

The 19-year-old remains in a critical condition.

The A62 Oldham Road at the junction with Hollinwood Avenue and the junction 22 exit from the M60 all remain closed while investigative work is carried out.

Inspector Danny Byrne, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a horrific set of events that tragically took the life of a teenager and has left another fighting for his life and we are doing all we can to support their families at this unimaginably difficult time.

“We immediately deployed several resources to the scenes and while we have a man in custody, our enquiries are still in the early stages and remain ongoing.

“I would urge anyone with any information to get in touch.  If you think you saw the insignia in the area last night or witnessed either of these collisions, please call police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting reference number 339 of 10/11/2018, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
