The official Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) trophy will be on display at the Carnegie Theatre in Workington this week in support of Allerdale Borough Council’s bid to bring the RLWC 2021 to the county.
The display, which takes place from Tuesday 27 November until Saturday 1 December, will also include Rugby League themed art exhibition. The trophy is currently touring the UK and will be on display at a number of locations that have submitted a bid to host the tournament.
The Council submitted a bid to bring the RLWC 2021 to Cumbria in July, and have since reached the applicant stage. The tournament has the potential to bring over £2.4 million into the local economy and the Council is asking people to support the bid through its #BacktheBid campaign. The successful bids are expected to be announced in January 2019.
Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “It’s great to have the RLWC trophy here in Allerdale once again and I would encourage everyone to go and see it while they have the chance and help support our bid. Cumbria is the heartland of Rugby League and our bid has the potential to bring a range of benefits to our local communities, so I’m looking forward to hearing whether we have been successful when it is announced in the new year.”
The trophy is free to view and the public can see the display between 9am and 4pm.
