Carlisle man handed 21-month jail term for petrol station burglary

Gary Milburn

ONE of three Carlisle men who burgled a petrol station shop has been jailed for 21 months.

The city’s crown court heard how a door at Hills garage, Corby Hill, was “smashed in” at around 11pm on February 7. Cigarettes, alcohol and scratch cards, valued at more than £1,800 were snatched during a raid which involved three Carlisle men.

More loss was inflicted on the business due to damage caused and hours of trade lost during the clean-up.

Two of the men responsible – Grant Stewart, 37, and 25-year-old Wayne McDonald – were caught on CCTV at the crime scene and had bought gloves for the raid earlier that day from a city DIY store.

Gary Milburn, 38, was said to be the break-in “lookout man”. He later left his mobile phone behind while fleeing a vehicle which had been tailed by police in Carlisle after the crime. This was analysed and shown to have been close to the garage when the offence occurred.

All three men admitted burglary. Milburn, of Lightfoot Drive, Harraby, was jailed for 21 months at the city’s crown court today (THURS).

McDonald, of Burnett Road, was handed a suspended prison term earlier this year, while Stewart, of Harris Crescent, will be sentenced on a future date.
