Cumbria Police have confirmed that Richard Fereday, 74, of Maryport, was the driver of the Nissan who died in the collision on the A66 at Embleton.
The collision occurred just after 4pm on the evening of Saturday 29 December when a silver Nissan Note travelling towards Cockermouth was in collision with a blue Volkswagon Golf travelling in the opposite direction.
A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “There is no further update currently available regarding the condition of the other people injured in the collision.”
The family of Doctor Richard Fereday has released the following tribute: “Doctor Richard Fereday retired to Maryport in 2007 after a career as a university lecturer in chemistry. He loved all the outdoor aspects of living by the sea and close to the Lakes, and he was also a keen fell walker, golfer and bird watcher.”
