Over 360 model houses delighted visitors to St Mary’s Church, Dalton, over the weekend of the 30th-31st March. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides, from across the South of Cumbria, created the buildings as part of an exhibition giving thanks for their own homes whilst also raising money for Shelter, the housing and homelessness charity.
The 2D buildings were made using a variety of techniques, including painting, applique and clay modelling, and created a very eye-catching display. County Commissioner, Sue Gudgeon, said ‘The detail and variety of the houses the girls created was lovely to see. The homes really reflected each individual girl’s unique take on what home means to them and when they were all standing together they were stunning’.
As well as supporting Shelter there were also prizes awarded for the best houses made by each age group and the 16th Trinity Rainbows, from Barrow were the proud winners of their category.
When asked what she had enjoyed about the project Dalton Brownie Isabella Ireland (7) said: “I liked colouring all the different coloured blocks and putting the glitter on. Me and Mia had a lot of fun. I went to look around all the houses at the church. I thought they were cool.”
Charlotte Wood (9), also from Dalton, said ‘I enjoyed using different materials and using my imagination to create a house. The exhibition was a good way to help people that don’t have a home and to make people realise that there are a lot of people out there that do not have a house and need support.’
Finally, if you missed the exhibition in Dalton don’t worry it’s going on tour. The next stop is Park House in Hawkshead, on the 18th April, and then into the Westmorland Centre in Kendal.
