The Riot Jazz Brass Band have released their 6th EP entitled ‘On Job’, dedicated to all the creatives working out of Manchester and driving the scene forward.
After their 2018 release ‘Ten Covers’, the band returned to the studio in early 2019 to record this selection of 5 original tracks. Two of the numbers will be familiar to live audiences over the past couple of years, while the other three were composed especially for the session. The grittier sounds of this EP provide the perfect backdrop for Chunky in full flow, and his lyrics feature prominently throughout.
The EP kicks off with lush brass chords leading to the driving house groove of ‘Deet Darh’ composed by Nick Walters and named after Chunky’s rhythmical lyric to match the trombone riff.
Next up is fan favourite ‘Subjugate’, composed by drummer Steve Pycroft – a heavy hip hop beat proves the perfect vehicle to hear Chunky in full flow. ‘Watch Me’, composed by Kieran McLeod, is a more reflective number featuring dense brass harmonies as well as a classic Sammy Warn trumpet solo.
The last two tracks, ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘Kraken’ are composed by trombonist Ed Horsey, and are explorations of a darker, bassier sound world, influenced by the sounds of grime and drill.
The EP is set for release on Riot Jazz Records on the 6th May 2019, and will be released as a limited run of 200 specially commissioned USB sticks disguised as cassette tapes. It will also be available digitally on all the usual platforms.
The Riot Jazz Brass Band will also be touring to promote the new release, including gigs in new territories previously not visited by the band. The band will also be working with young musicians and composers in a series of workshops to try and pass on some knowledge and inspiration to the next generation of musicians.
