Two people have been freed from the wreckage by firefighter following a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A592 near Dalemain Mansion.
Police were called at approx 2:15pm.
An air ambulance attended the scene.
A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Two fire engines from Penrith attended a road traffic collision near Dalemain, Penrith.
“The firefighters extricated two casualties from the vehicle using hydraulic cutting gear.
“Both casualties were conveyed to hospital.
“Fire service was on scene for approximately one hour and forty five minutes.”
The A592 is closed in both directions between Pooley Bridge and the A66 Rheged roundabout.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find an alternative route.
